With the New Year comes new opportunities to cultivate mindsets and habits that will support you in and out of the classroom. Making your wellbeing a priority creates a ripple effect of positivity that will be felt in your classroom, throughout the school and in other areas of your life. It all starts with a simple intention.

An intention is a guiding principal for how you want to be, live and show up in the world. Intentions differ from goals in that they are not necessarily linked to tangible outcomes. An intention may be an aim, purpose, or attitude you'd like to commit to. Practice this intention-setting technique upon waking to bring meaning and motivation to your day!

Intention-Setting

Sit up straight and comfortably.

Close your eyes.

Feel your feet flat on the floor.

Relax your shoulders.

Feel the air moving in and out of your nose.

Ask yourself: "What is my intention for today?"

You may use the following prompts to help you explore this question:

What do I need to do to take better care of myself today? How can I be more compassionate toward myself and my students during difficult moments? What quality of mind do I want to strengthen and develop?

Set your intention for today.

For example: "Today I will prioritize my own needs, be kind to myself, and have fun with my students."

Visualize what this fulfilled intention might look like.

Take a deep breath in, hold, and exhale slowly.

Notice how you feel.

Slowly open your eyes.
